Deschambault Lake

The community of Deschambault Lake is 340 kms northeast of Prince Albert and lays 30 kms by gravel off the paved Hanson Lake Road (Highway #106). The closest larger centers are Creighton, Saskatchewan, and Flin Flon, Manitoba located about 140 kms to the east. Most residents of Deschambault regularly travel to these centers for shopping, medical and dental appointments, and recreation activities.

Approximately 1100 people live in Deschambault Lake. The industries in the community include crafts, trapping, fishing, rice harvesting, and saw mill. People in the community enjoy skating, hockey, boating, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, boating, camping, and fishing. Schools are available for students from nursery to grade twelve. Two churches are attended in the community, Anglican and Evangelical. There has been a new high school built and a new Elementary School will be constructed this fiscal year (2006-2007). There has also been a new ice arena built.

Health care is delivered from a renovated and enlarged health center. The center is open Monday to Friday for public health programs and treatment services, but also provides 24 hour emergency care. Ambulance service comes from Pelican Narrows, and will meet a medivac from the community at the highway junction. Doctors from Flin Flon visit two days per week. The Health Center is staffed with 4 nurses including the nurse in charge. The nurses work in cooperation with community health staff to deliver all community health programs and treatments. A Home Care nurse and Home Health Aides work to deliver Home and Community Care. There is a Holistic Health Coordinator and holistic health workers whose focus is Mental Health and Addictions.

A Full-Time Dental Therapist offers services to the community and school from the clinic. Recently, there has been Telehealth installed with capability to access Southend Telehealth, Pelican Narrows and P.A. Main Office as well as other provincial sites. Computers are available in the clinic with high speed Internet as is available in all PBCN communities.

There is an RCMP detachment with 3 officers living in the community.

There is a restaurant and 2 confectionaries in Deschambault Lake, one with a gas bar.

New accommodations have been built for nursing and other professionals. The nursing units are spacious, fully furnished with 1 to 3 bedrooms, living area, kitchen, a full bath, laundry facilities, cable T.V. via Satellite and a VCR.
